Preventing Burnout

Resources and strategies to help you manage stress and find wellness

Farming is deeply rewarding work, but it also comes with unique pressures that can take a toll. Many flower farmers face physical demands, financial uncertainty, and competing demands of family and business. It’s no surprise that farmers experience higher stress levels than the general population—76% report moderate to high perceived stress.

Burnout can happen when we continually give more energy and resources than we have to spare, leaving us feeling exhausted and disconnected. The good news is that with the right tools, strategies, and mindset, burnout can be managed—and even prevented. This page offers resources to help you recognize the signs, find support, and build resilience for the seasons ahead.

Starting the season Right

Unpredictable weather patterns, financial pressures, and never ending to-do lists can quickly lead to stress and burnout for specialty cut flower growers. The good news? There are simple strategies and practical steps farmers can take early in the season to set themselves up for a more manageable and enjoyable year.

In this video, Theresa Schumilas of Garden Party Flower Farms shares realistic advice for planning, prioritizing, and maintaining your passion in the busy months ahead–drawing on insights from other flower farms and her own lessons learned through years of experience in the field.
